The University of Coimbra (UC) is an undeniable reference in R&D, recently acknowledged as the Portuguese Institution with higher Horizon 2020 funding. It outstanding advances in scientific and translational research is promoted through its Faculties, such as the Faculty of Medicine (FMUC) and R&D units such as the consortium Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB) recently awarded with Associated Laboratory status with a 100% score. CIBB integrates the Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR) and the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology resulting in a hub of excellence in Biomedicine and Biotechnology research.Â
Funções, competências e atribuições
iCBR is the FMUC R&D unit, which is devoted to 5 major research lines: Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases, Neuropharmacology and Neuropsychiatry, Vision Diseases, Environment, Genetics and Oncobiology and Healthy Living and Active Ageing. iCBR is internationally recognized for its innovative and ground-breaking fundamental, clinical and translational research, with a particular focus on molecular and cellular mechanisms of disease, identifying therapeutic targets and developing new therapeutic strategies and biomarkers, being highly competitive in obtaining (inter)national funding.
Importantly, by being rooted at FMUC, one of the most important Schools of Medicine in Portugal, holding 27 Institutes and 28 University Clinics, there is a vital link and a highly privileged relation with Coimbra University Hospital (CHUC) promoting not only an elevated education but also basic-clinical-translational research.
Unitedly, iCBR is highly aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda by promoting well-being for all at all ages, ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and reinforce gender equality.Â
